Baby Raglan Sweater

This is the sweater that goes with the Baby Fruit Hats from a few years ago. So many people like the pattern that I decided to include it on the web site!

This sweater is knit from the neck down, so the cast-on row is actually the neck. I enjoyed knitting this way, especially since there are no seams to contend with at the end.

Size:

0-3 months

Materials and gauge

  • Two 50-gram skeins of Cascade Cherub DK
  • US #5 single-pointed needles
  • Set of 4 US #5 double-pointed needles
  • 5 buttons
  • 4 markers
  • 2 stitch holders

Gauge: 5 sts/inch

Instructions

Cast on 66 sts.

Knit the first row as follows:
K3, place marker (PM), K 20, PM, K 20, PM, K 20, PM, K3.

Next row: Purl.

V-neck and Raglan Increase:

Row 1: Inc 1, * knit to within 1 st of marker, YO, K1, slip marker, K1, YO*. Rep * to* 3X, knit to last st. Inc 1 in last st of row.

Row 2: Purl.

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until there are 136 sts on needle.

Raglan Increase:

Row 1: * Knit to within 1 st of marker, YO, K1, slip marker, K1, YO*. Repeat * to * 3X then knit to end of row.

Row 2: Purl.

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until there are 176 sts on needle.

Body:

Row 1: Knit to 1st stitch marker, place sts between 1st and 2nd markers on a stitch holder. CO 4 sts across gap. Knit to 3rd marker, place sts between 3rd and 4th markers on stitch holder. CO 4 sts across gap and knit to end of row. 96sts remain on needle.

Continue in St st until piece measures 9 1⁄4". K1, P1 rib for 3⁄4".

Bind off.

Sleeves:

Change to double-pointed needles.

Row 1:

Starting at the center of the underarm, pick up and knit 3 sts, then knit the first 14 sts off of holder.

Using the second needle, knit the next 16 sts off of holder.

With third needle, knit the remaining 14 sts from holder and pick up and knit 3 sts at the underarm.

Decrease Row: K1, K2tog, knit to within 3 sts of end of row, SSK, K1.

Knit the next 3 rows.

Repeat the decrease row, followed by 3 regular rows until there are 36 sts remaining.

Repeat the decrease row twice — 32 sts.

K1, P1 for 5 rows.

Bind off.

Finishing:

On right front of sweater, evenly place 5 markers for buttonholes, starting 1⁄4" from bottom to just where the v-neck decrease begins.

PU and K 60 sts from bottom right of sweater to first raglan seam, 18 sts along right shoulder, 18 sts along back of neck, 18 sts along left shoulder and 60 sts down the left front of sweater.

K1, P1 for 1 row.

Next row: YO, K2tog to create buttonholes.

Continue in K1, P1 rib. When you reach each marker, YO, K2tog to create buttonholes.

After last buttonhole row, K1, P1 rib for 2 more rows and bind off.

Sew in ends and attach buttons.
