American Flag
Dimensions: 10" X 16" Materials:
The stripes are worked in garter st (knit all rows) and the blue field in seed st (Row 1- k1, p1. Row 2- k the purls and p the knits). Cast on 72 sts., using the red yarn. K 5 rows. Change to white yarn and k 6 rows. Change back to red and k 6 rows. Continue in this manner until you have 6 stripes (3 red, 3 white). Change back to red and k 37 sts. Attach the blue and k 35 sts. In the next row, begin the seed st in the blue section. Make sure to wind the colors once around each other every time you change back and forth between colors in the middle of the row. Continue as set, changing red and white every 6 rows until 12 stripes have been completed. Change to red and work 5 rows. BO as follows; BO knitwise 34 sts with the blue, change to red and continue binding off knitwise to last st. Stars: Using one strand of white, begin by embroidering 30 stars in rows of 6 horizontally by 5 vertically. Then embroider 20 stars in between the 30 in rows of 5 horizontally by 4 vertically. Use whatever technique you like. I merely made a cross then an X. Use the purl bumps of the seed stitch like a grid to help keep your stars even. Finishing: Sew in all ends. To hang the flag, I crocheted five loops along the top then ran a dowel through them.
